Magda Kuca is a Polish visual artist and photographer based in London, working with portraiture and storytelling through heritage photographic processes. Her practice explores memory, heritage, folklore and the materiality of photography.
She specialises in wet plate collodion with an emphasis on materiality, craftsmanship and slow, hands-on ways of making images. Her work has been recognised and exhibited internationally, including at Aperture Gallery, Photo Vogue and Photo London. Recent commissions and collaborations include Nike ACG, Kew Gardens, the British Museum, BBC Radio.
Kuca is a recipient of the Centre for British Photography Realisation Grant and LensCulture Art Photography Award, and winner of the Grand Prix at Vintage Photo Festival. Her work is held in public and private collections, has been recognised internationally and supported by WeTransfer, V&A Museum & Royal Photographic Society. She also presented her work at Bodleian Library, Oxford University and contributed to a project by European Parliament.
Magda Kuca uses historical photographic techniques to reflect on the links between personal memory, ancestry and folklore. Her projects draw on personal experience, pagan traditions and Slavic culture in an ongoing investigation into the connection between human and nature.
