BBC x Kenny Allstar wet collodion portraits
WET COLLODION PORTRAITRS FOR BBC RADIO1xTRA WITH KENNY ALLSTAR
Kenny Allstar is a British DJ and radio presenter. We shot wet collodion portraits of Kenny, accompanying launch of his new show.
After consultation in my studio with project coordinator, we set up a date and initially planned to shoot at Maida Vaile studios. Plan had to be adapter due to unforeseen circumstances we changed place of the shot to my studio.
THE PROCESS
Session took about 2h, plates were shot in my studio garden and processed ‘on the spot’ after each shot
Shoot It resulted in 3 wet collodion plates on the black painted 4mm glass, 18x24cm in size.
After the photoshoot plates had to be varnished for protection and varnish took a week to dry after which point they were ready to be handed over.
OUTCOMES
Photoshoot was time sensitive, after plates dried they were scanned before varnishing and scans delivered a day after. Kenny wore clothing with branding that was important to him to show-with this technique images come out mirrored. In final scans we had to mirror them back so the text is in correct orientation. Week after when varnish was dried original wet plates were ready to be handed over and divided between BBC and Kenny. Scans of the plates were used for the launch of Kenny’s new radio show at BBC1Xtra.
